The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
Psalm 103:8

Our History

In the year 1889, Mr. Philip Whitelock gathered 17 children (including his family of 4) in his home and began Bible instruction. His home was above his grocery store, still standing, at the corner of Queen and Kenilworth Ave. (presently Whitlock’s restaurant). In 1891 the church received its charter.

churchThat small group outgrew the premises, so they built a worship-centre across his home on Kenilworth Ave. (presently the Hebrew Synagogue.) However, as the membership grew, they built a larger building on Waverley Rd. just a street over.

This new large building seats 250 people in the sanctuary, and was dedicated in 1908. Since 1891, Waverley Rd. Baptist Church has been serving the Beach, and is an integral part of this community.

Historical Note: Beaches Hockey League (now Toronto Hockey League) began in a rink behind the church building, as it was prepared by the young men of the 1911 youth group.

Recently over $380.000 was spent to upgrade the facilities to meet the challenges of the 21st. century. New washrooms, new nursery, a stair lift, new boiler, new roof, new P.A., etc.
